US officials have defended a plan to install 3.6 million solar photovoltaic panels throughout the nation by 2025.

The Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy announced the solar-panel goal at a White House event that was attended by President Barack Obama, Secretary of State John Kerry, Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius and others.

The goal is outlined in a new Energy Department strategy for the United States, which will be formally unveiled on 7 November by the executive office of the president.

As US President-elect Donald Trump has claimed an interest in boosting renewable energy, his transition team plans to push for a broader mandate to install 10 gigawatts of solar power by 2050.

The plan would generate more than a third of new electricity demand, but the government is currently seeking to avoid the grid’s dependence on fossil fuels.

The Obama administration adopted the renewable-energy target after the worst of Hurricane Sandy hit the east coast in October 2012, with the grid experiencing an 11-year decline in power supply. The goal was later revised to 5 gigawatts in 2015, down from 8 gigawatts.

“We’ve been abl구미출장샵e to provide low-carbon jobs and continue to have a stable, reliable environment to grow here in the United States,” Obama said at the White House.

However, he noted that he did not believe the target should be expanded too much, saying the country’s goal needed to be kept as “fair” as possible.

Obama also repeated that the US needed to adopt a “zero-emission” society, in which the US does not rely on fossil fuels.

He said he would convene a meeting of the president’s cabinet this year to discuss how to achieve this goal. He said he believed the US should develop a zero-emission economy, “the foundation on which our communities can thrive”.

The current US energy mix is largely in coal and oil. The Department of Energy is expected to propose this year a proposal to limit the use of coal in future power plants and us
